In 2019, The State51 Conspiracy commissioned me to build a unique instrument and then record an album with it. My work centres around creating fresh interfaces with sound for both performer and audience. I have what you might call a low-key but long-term presence on the experimental music scene and have most recently turned my attention to building a variety of mechanical musical instruments that feature human performers; I call these inside-out orchestrions.

Many of these are built in collaboration with other artists and makers, such as the Mammoth Beat Organ which debuted at Birmingham’s Supersonic Festival 2019, and was built in collaboration with artist Graham Dunning.

After an extended process of experimentation, collaboration (with creative technologist Richard Sewell), multiple studio floods, and you know what, my latest project, ams, (pronounced as a single word - æmz) took form in 2021. ams stands for 'acoustic modular system' and uses control voltage to activate the acoustic output of its modules, as well as integration with other modular gear. ‘ams - Umber Ne’ explores the instrument’s sonic possibilities over seven pieces, each recorded in one take with me and ams performing a series of precarious contorted duets. This is an album that didn’t exist before the creation of ams, and one that couldn’t have existed.
